Revisited from bottle, the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes offers up aromas of sweet berry fruit, black truffle and spices, framed by a discreet touch of oak. It is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with a concentrated, rich and youthfully reserved core built around velvety tannins and lively acids.

Subtle aromas of sweet strawberries and hints of citrus. Violets, too. Full-bodied and very fruity, but the tannins create a creamy texture and the acidity provides a tangy finish. Give this two or three years to come together. Better after 2022, but already fun to drink.
Village wines typically have 30% new oak and the rest of the barrels are more than 3 years old, explains winemaker Jérôme Flous. Barrel sample. Mid crimson. Peppery, lightly spiced, a hint of stems perhaps. Definitely a herby freshness to the dark-red fruit. Dark and savoury on the palate, dark fruited and elegant. Finest of tannins but all in balance. Succulent, persistent yet somehow weightless. (JH)
