Rings's 2023 Riesling Kallstadt Saumagen GG opens with a clear, fresh nose of light fruits and chalk. It's very deep and mineral, with citrus notes and, above all, very, very young. Silky, elegant and balanced on the palate, with surprisingly juicy, elegant fruit, this is a dense Saumagen showing a lot of substance. Less massive but fresh and with a good backbone, almost straightforward and thus appearing slimmer than Kuhn's Saumagen, it is positively astringent on the long and intense finish. Needs time. Slightly more generous than in 2022, with notes of salted lemons and spicy yellow fruit. Elegant, energetic and smoky. Initial impression is one of delicacy and directness, but the deeper you dig the more complex it becomes. A nesting doll in liquid form that ends with a brittle shard of pure, unadulterated limestone for those willing to see it through to the end. (PS)
Made entirely in wood, the 2023 Riesling Kallstadter Saumagen Grosses Gewächs hails from the four best parcels across the twelve that Rings has on this site. Funky, flinty reduction clings to the nose. The palate hits with mild juiciness, pith and ripeness, slowly focusing in on its essential brightness. It presents svelteness and lovely citric spice on the long, pure, Amalfi lemon zest finish. (Bone-dry)
