Score 95/100 · Drink 2023-2038, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Mar 2022

The 2016 Chopping Block, a blend of 46% Syrah, 28% Grenache and 26% Mourvèdre, is still youthfully coiled, suggesting it will have a long life in the cellar. It takes some time to unfold its perfume of red and blue berries, laurel leaves, licorice and earth. The full-bodied palate has ripe, silty tannins, and bursts of perfumed berry fruit appear on the mineral-driven finish.

A blend of 46% Syrah, 28% Grenache, and the rest Mourvèdre, brought up in 60% new wood, the 2016 Chopping Block sports a saturated purple color as well as notes of crème de cassis, toasted spices, graphite, licorice, and plenty of background oak. With full body, a layered, rich texture, and sweet tannins, give bottles a year or three and it should keep through 2026+. These are big, rich, powerful wines from Connor McMahon. While I’d like to see a touch more finesse and elegance in some of the wines, they certainly bring the power.
