Score 91-93/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2005

(there are actually more than 16 varieties planted in this old vineyard, which dates back to the middle of the 19th century, and was replanted in 1884 following phylloxera) Good bright ruby-red. Aromas of black raspberry, mocha, tar, brown spices, menthol and black licorice; rather claret-like. Dense and thick on entry, then extremely primary and closed in the middle, but already showing lovely spicy lift and inner-mouth perfume. An infant of a zinfandel, with the strong acidity and substantial ripe tannins to ensure a slow evolution in bottle. This will grow spicier over the years. The grenache in this vineyard was thoroughly ripe in 2003, and comprises an unusually high 5% of the blend.
