This wine competes with the finest red wines made anywhere in the world. It possesses an intensity and complexity that reminds me of a hypothetical blend of a super-concentrated vintage of La Mission-Haut-Brion and Cheval Blanc. The color is dark, nearly opaque garnet/purple. The nose offers up huge scents of cedar, black fruits, truffles, and anise. In the mouth, there is wonderful sweetness and expansive, chocolatey, berry fruit, full body, gobs of glycerin and intensity, as well as an explosively long finish. This wine, which is still relatively young, is capable of lasting at least another 10-15 years. I know this will be a hard wine to find, as well as frightfully expensive, but the Calvert/Woodley Shop in Washington, DC (202-966-4400) stocks the entire line-up of Weinert wines. Medium red. Decadent aromas of milk chocolate, leather, fruit cake and damp earth; distinct hint of maderization. Then lush and superripe in the mouth, with sweet flavors of chocolate, leather, earth and tobacco. This still retains impressive fruit and middle-palate texture. Finishes with smooth, thoroughly resolved tannins and Graves-like notes of iron, leather, tobacco and hot bricks. The slightly less rustic and more modern-style '94 may well age like this bottle-or it may ultimately surpass it.
