(54% syrah, 30% zinfandel, 8% merlot and 8% petite sirah; 15.1% alcohol): Inky ruby. Sexy aromas of raspberry, cherry compote, lavender and cola, with a smoky mineral topnote. Pliant, juicy and nicely focused, offering sweet red berry flavors and showing no rough edges. The supple finish leaves sweet cola and vanilla notes behind, along with an exotic floral pastille character.

The most interesting of the wines I tasted this year, Ecluse's 2010 Improv Lock Vineyard opens up beautifully in the glass, with expressive dark fruit and compelling mid-palate pliancy. The 2010 boasts gorgeous depth and persistence through to a finish laced with black pepper, grilled herbs and spices. The Improv is 54% Syrah, 30% Zinfandel, 8% Merlot and 8% Petite Sirah.

More sweet and upfront on the nose, with plenty of red and black berry fruit, spice, bramble, and hints of flowers, the 2010 Écluse Improv Lock Vineyard (54% Syrah, 30% Zinfandel, 8% Merlot, 8% Petite Sirah) is medium to full-bodied, round, supple, and well textured on the palate. Possessing an easygoing feel, yet with excellent freshness and a solid dose of ripe tannin, it should be enjoyed over the coming 5-7 years.
