Tasting notes
Showing complex and slightly exotic aromas and flavors of plum pit, bramble, sweet spice and pepper, the 2010 Syrah Head Honcho hits the palate with a fruit-loaded, medium to full-bodied texture that’s reined in by clean acidity and slightly firm, edgy tannin. An outstanding bottle of wine, it should evolve nicely for another year or two and hold through 2020. Drink now-2020. These value-priced efforts are made by McPrice Myers and offer ridiculously good drinking for not much money. The wines are, generally speaking, upfront and fruit-loaded, yet always offer solid complexity, good richness and overall very well-made profiles. Tel. (805) 237-1245; www.barrel27-mcpricemyers.com

Readers will have a very hard time keeping their hands off the 2010 Head Honcho. Dark cherries, plums, tobacco and leather burst from the glass as layers of flavor fill out the wine's broad-shouldered frame. There is plenty of energy, focus and drive in this gorgeous Syrah from Barrel 27 and proprietor Mac Myers. Today, the Head Honcho is flat-out beautiful.
