Tasting notes
(from Nina Buty's estate vineyard in the Rocks): Bright, deep red-ruby. Musky, earthy scents of olive tapenade and brine and fresh blood, lifted by high-pitched spices. This sweet, smooth, distinctly wild, old-style Syrah is more about soil than dark fruits. Finishes with firm tannins and lingering notes of smoke, blood and chocolate. Conveys a strong terroir character.

I loved the 2012 Syrah Rock Garden, and it had classic Rocks tapenade, peat moss, cured meats and peppery notes to go with a core of dark fruit. Full-bodied, ripe, beautifully concentrated and textured, it still stays remarkably seamless and silky, with no hard edges and fine tannin. Relatively upfront, it should still have another decade of prime drinking.
