For the 2021 Pinot Noir Own-Rooted, Hundred Suns proprietors Grant Coulter and Renée Saint-Amour sourced grapes from the Koosah, Bednarik and Noren Vineyards. "We were so impressed by some of these wines in barrel," the pair says of the own-rooted fruit. "Some of these vines have phylloxera and they won't last forever. It's rarer and rarer now to have ungrafted vines." In this idyllic vintage, the Own-Rooted Pinot is fantastically perfumed, unfolding raspberry jam and red cherry, tobacco leaves and juniper, cinnamon and flint. Despite its elegant tannins and energetic acidity, it has surprisingly concentrated layers of fruit, earth and spice, and it finishes with tremendous flavor and nuance. It will benefit from 3-5 years in bottle.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Own-Rooted is deeper red and unfolds with deep layers of pure black cherry, toasted cardamom, and violets. Medium to full-bodied, with sweet tannins, mouth-filling fruit, and seamless acidity, this is an outstanding wine with great length. It will drink well over the next 15 or more years.
Noren Vineyard, Bednarik Vineyard and Koosah Vineyard. A blend of all the own-rooted sites. Pale purple. Dark and plummy fruit. Spicier than others in the portfolio with a bit more oak, wet cedar and crunchy leaves. Rounder palate with a rich concentration of fruit and a long drive through the finish. Firm acid. This is for the long haul – ageworthy, long and elegant. Earthy and rich. (SCJ)
