Bright, deep ruby. Shy nose hints at violet, bitter chocolate, licorice, mocha, black olive and cedar. Fatter and sweeter than the Estate bottling, but with a slightly aggressive cedary quality to its black raspberry, licorice and spice flavors. Classically dry but does it have enough fruit to reward cellaring? Finishes with substantial dusty tannins.

The 2012 Syrah Hudson Vineyard provides a fascinating contrast to the Estate Syrah. Savory and earthy notes emerge first, followed by dark fruit, leather and dried flowers. I very much like the sense of energy and depth in the glass. The 2012 is very beautiful, but not quite as striking as the Estate.
