Inky ruby. Displays potent scents of black and blue fruit compote, licorice, pipe tobacco and violet, with a peppery note adding lift. Chewy blueberry and boysenberry flavors are firmed by juicy acidity and become spicier with air. The violet quality comes back on the perfumed finish, which features rounded tannins and a touch of succulent herbs.

The 2012 Mourvèdre Bedrock Vineyard wraps around the palate with gorgeous depth. The 2012 possesses lovely iron and ferrous notes that add complexity to the fruit. In this vintage, the Bedrock presents a floral, red-toned expression of Mourvèdre. A juicy, resonant finish rounds things out nicely. The 2012 should drink well pretty much upon release.

The 2012 Mourvedre Bedrock Vineyard (100% Mourvedre) reveals lots of peppery, dusty soil notes intermixed with underbrush, black raspberries and black currants. Surprisingly elegant and velvety (unusual for a Mourvedre), it should drink nicely for 4-5 years. Carlisle Winery’s Mike Officer and his wife are one of the wonderful stories in the wine world. Going from a part-time home winemaker, to turning out some of his beloved Zinfandels, to becoming one of the two or three leading guardians of old vine Zinfandel in Northern California, Mike Officer was so good at making wine that he changed careers and wine consumers are the beneficiaries. The single vineyard Zins are absolutely remarkable. Everyone who loves Zinfandel should be on Carlisle’s mailing list, the wines are primarily available only from the winery. Sadly, Mike Officer is not making as much Syrah as he used to given the difficult marketplace for this varietal. That’s a shame, as great Syrahs are truly magnificent wines. Tel. (707) 566-7700
