Score 92/100 · Drink 2019-2027, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Nov 2015
(from a 1997 planting with a Phelps clone, on ancient soils at an altitude of 1,200 feet; 30% of the stems were added back for the fermentation): Bright medium ruby. High-pitched, citrus-laced aromas of nectar-like dark berries and kirsch , herbs and smoky minerals. Lush and sexy on the palate, conveying a strong impresson of extract to the flavors of dark berries and spices. Lovely depth of flavor and class here, but still a baby. Finishes firmly tannic, with a late hint of licorice pastille. Winemaker Devison told me that he's a believer in ABF: anything but fruit. "Holding back is what's difficult: getting herbs, getting meat."
