A pure, cooler-climate expression of Grenache, the 2010 Grenache La Montagnette Upland Vineyard is 100% Grenache from the Upland Vineyard that’s located in the Snipes Mountain AVA of the Yakima Valley. Aged for 10 months in neutral French oak, with regular less stirring, it possesses a deep, semi-opaque color to go with mineral-driven notes of black cherries and fresh small berries, pepper, sappy underbrush, flowers and damp earth. This flows to a medium-bodied, elegant, concentrated and perfectly balanced Grenache that, despite the cooler vintage, has solid ripeness, integrated acidity and the ripe, polished tannin. It can be drunk now, but will be better in 2-3 years and drink well for 12-15 years. Drink 2015-2025. These wines are made by the talented Jon Meuret and feature incredibly pure, polished and perfectly balanced profiles that lean towards the lighter, fresher end of the spectrum. Nevertheless, they don’t lack for richness or depth and build on the palate. The 2010s, which I raved about last year, are still incredibly young, vibrant and in need of another handful of years in the cellar. (14.8% alcohol): Good bright red. Spicy cherry and raspberry aromas are lifted by floral and minty topnotes. Juicy, brisk and sharply delineated, with a positive high-toned quality to the red and darker berry flavors. Sweeter and fatter than the Jaja blend but also tighter and longer, finishing with suave tannins and lingering dark fruit and spice notes. Really lovely material and freshness here without any sullying influence of new oak (this wine spent ten months in five-year-old barrels). Superb New World grenache.
