Ruby-red. The richest and most powerful of this year's set of pinots, offering aromas and flavors of black raspberry, cherry and licorice, with a touch of cola. Deeply pitched, smoky dark berry flavors are lifted by tangy acidity and gain spiciness with air. Finishes juicy and long, with the cola note recurring.

The 2008 Pinot Noir Melville comes across as a touch lean, with limited expressiveness and a compact, lean finish. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014. The Chardonnays and Pinots are the highlights among these new releases from Bonaccorsi Wine Company. I was less enamored with the 2007 Syrahs I tasted. The Pinots are vinified with indigenous yeasts and spend 18 months in French oak barrels, 60% new for all wines except the Melville, which gets 70%. Tel. (310) 994-3207; www.bonawine.net
Vivid red. Exhilarating, seductive aromas of raspberry, blood orange, Asian spices and potpourri. Silky and sweet on entry, then brilliantly vibrant and delineated in the mid-palate, with a sexy floral quality lifting the flavors of red berry preserves and blood orange. Tangy minerality lends a weightless impression, and the finish is clean, focused and very persistent. This is lovely.
