As with previous releases, the NV Brut is a 60-40 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with a refined mousse and dry, crisp, lengthy layers of green apple, citrus, and a bite of brioche. With 10-12% reserve wine from cask, it represents from five to seven vintages in one bottle, from two to seven years old, the style of the house. The reserve aged in oak adds texture and length, broadening the Chardonnay’s natural citrus-driven notes and lightness of being. Disgorged April 2024, the amount of dosage has gone down year to year and is around 9 grams per liter this time around. Drink now and for the next 8-10 years.

Impressive from first sip, the MV Brut, made from 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir, with 10 to 15% reserve wine, opens in a world of buttered toasty notes, spicy pear, and hazelnut. The oak and fruit shine amidst a backdrop of refreshing acidity speckled in green apple and Meyer lemon. Elegant in style, this medium-bodied Brut has an underlying thread of razor-edged acidity and great length that should keep it fresh and rewarding over the next 8-10 years. Dosage is 10 grams per liter. Champagne Louis Roederer started planting grapes in the Anderson Valley in 1982, when California sparkling wine wasn’t yet a thing. Over time, this Philo-based outpost and production facility known as Roederer Estate has become entirely estate-grown, now farming 600 acres of organically and biodynamically farmed vines in the area, which estate winemaker Arnaud Weyrich says has higher acidity on average than Champagne. The winery’s signature style is to add oak-aged reserve wines to each year’s cuvée.

The NV Estate Brut is scented of sour lemon, almonds and biscuits with flinty touches. The medium-bodied palate is rounded and creamy with bright, lemony character and a long, mineral-driven finish.
