The 2014 Le Boucher, David Arthur's new Merlot-based blend, is terrific. Dark, powerful and tightly wound, the 2014 is one of the more structured, tannic wines in this range. The flavors are bold and incisive throughout. Black cherry, smoke, licorice and tobacco are some of the notes that give the 2014 its virile, brooding personality. I would cellar the 2014 for at least a few years. Winemaker Nile Zacherle adds that the objective is to increase the Cabernet Franc in this wine in coming years.

In 2014, the Le Boucher is mostly Merlot-dominated, which gives it plenty of mid-palate juiciness and intensity. Lavender, sage, mint, mocha and new leather flesh out in an effortless, forward 2014 that will drink well early. The 2014 is 70% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot, which is a big change vis-a-vis 2013.
