Score 92/100 · Drink 2012-2022, Jeb Dunnuck, Nov 2010

The 2006 Copain Syrah Garys' Vineyard exhibits a deep, opaque purple color as well as a decidedly earthy, dark bouquet of cassis, tapenade, herb, river moss and a touch of peppered meat. Some serious minerality and freshly crushed stone aromas come out with air. The wine is medium to full bodied with a solid, full mid-palate, fantastic density, and a tannic, structured finish. Given the quality depth on the palate and the tannin, this should have a long drink window. Delicious now, I still think this can improve. Give bottles another 2 to 3 years and then drink over the following 10.

Previously recommended, but no tasting note given. One of my favorite California wine producers, Wells Guthrie, like a champion truffle-hunting dog, seems to unearth top vineyards for his wines. The other 2006 Pinots I tasted, as well as the 2007s, all seem austere, rather attenuated in the finish, and essentially angular. While obviously less charming and fleshy in their youth, I doubt they will age any better since there is not a whole lot of flesh on them. Part of this can be explained by the vintage of 2006, but that wouldn’t explain the same stylistic orientation of the 2007s. Turning to the 2007s, I think these are overall superior wines because of the better vintage. The 2007 Syrahs range from excellent to outstanding, and this seems to be Wells Guthrie’s strongest suit, as it has been in previous vintages. Tel. (707) 541-7474; Fax (707) 541-7575

Bright ruby. Highly aromatic nose displays fresh raspberry, cassis, candied violet, tobacco and smoky minerals. Tightly focused red and dark berry flavors are medium in weight, with chewy tannins adding grip. Finishes with good tangy lift and repeating minerality. This needs some time to unwind.
