Score 88/100 · Drink 2016-2024, Robert Parker, Mar 2016
From the Martinelli-owned Zio Tony Ranch Vineyard, which the Dehlingers call the 2013 Syrah Frei Road, this Syrah is more restrained, more Crozes-Hermitage-like, with underbrush, medium body, and red and black currant fruit. Drink now-2024.

Dehlinger's 2013 Syrah Frei Road emerges from one of the Martinelli family's top sites. A wine of density and voluptuous power, the Frei Road hits the palate with layers of inky black fruit, spice, licorice and new leather. The Frei Road is an especially dark, brooding Syrah loaded with personality. Readers should expect an extroverted, flamboyant Syrah. Stylistically, the Frei Road is quite a bit darker and more concentrated than the estate Syrahs.
