Score 96/100 · Robert Parker, Oct 2013

The spectacular 2011 Syrah Stagecoach Vineyard Block I-4 (250 cases produced) boasts a dense purple color along with notes of camphor, blackberries, cassis and charcoal. The wine hits the palate with a thunderous display of black fruits, loads of glycerin (15.9% alcohol), (but not a bit of heat,) sweet tannin and stunningly rich, concentrated fruit. A terrific, full-bodied texture, sensational purity and a long finish result in an iconic Syrah from one of the great pioneers in Napa Valley. The Venge family, charismatic father Nils and son Kirk, sourced the Bone Ash Cabernet from their 12-acre family vineyard in Calistoga. The name is taken from the white volcanic soils that some refer to as tufa. Kirk Venge purchased the brand in 2008 from his father Nils and has been making the wines for Venge Family Reserve ever since. Tel. (707) 942-9100
