Monteraponi's 2014 Chianti Classico Riserva shows just how compelling this vintage can be in the right hands. Savory, perfumed and also deep on the palate, the 2014 Riserva possesses remarkable intensity while never abandoning its classical roots. The 2014 needs a few years to be at its very best, but it is super-impressive, even at this early stage.

Blend of Sangiovese with Canaiolo and Colorino. Single vineyard of 46-year-old vines. Mid ruby with a brick cast. Lovely perfume soars from the glass. Fragrant with cherry and herbs and a touch of spice. That fragrance matched on the palate and shaped by a definite, well-controlled tannic structure and plenty of freshness. Juicy and yet long and complex and beautifully balanced. (JH)

Monteraponi's 2014 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Campitello offers impressive surprises. I would not have expected this level of finesse and fine elegance from a vintage that delivered so many challenges in terms of adverse weather and lack of summertime luminosity. This Riserva takes it all in comfortable stride. It offers a dark and more robust taste profile with black fruit, leather and tobacco. The mouthfeel is thin and compact for sure, but what it does not deliver in terms of power, it compensates with in finesse.

Cask sample. Radda in Chianti. 90% Sangiovese, 7% Canaiolo, 3% Colorino. Lustrous ruby. Serious Sangiovese nose with plenty of depth and just a tiny bit stalky. Juicy sweet-sour cherry palate with fine, coating tannins. Just a tiny bit sour on the finish, but very long and certainly stands out. (WS)
