Bright magenta. Pungent cherry pit, game, candied violet and baking spice aromas are complemented by suggestions of woodsmoke and musky earth. In a distinctly Old World style, showing very good depth to its sweet dark fruit, spicecake and smoked meat flavors. The spicy quality builds steadily through a very long, youthfully tannic finish that shows impressive clarity and mineral thrust.

The sandiest silica site by the winery with 3 m (10 feet) of sand on sandstone. 65% sand! Light is radiated to such an extent that they can lose a third of fruit to sunburn. They need to ensure there are leaves under the fruit. Only the 2004 hasn’t aged that well. They’re still drinking Josh’s first vintage of this wine, the 1999. Quite wild and raw nose. Pretty funky but not excessively so. Chewy finish still. (JR)
Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2016 Pinot Noir Silice Vineyard is very savory on the nose with notions of smoked meats, black pepper and olive over spicy black fruits. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the mouth with brambly black fruits, layers of bacon fat and pepper, with a wonderful juicy freshness to lift all that density and a good frame of grainy tannins, fleshing out on the long, savory finish. This is very Syrah-esque! 1,000 cases produced.
