Ruby-red. Black fruits, licorice and cracked pepper on the nose; if the 2001 is a bit claret-like, this offers an essence of zinfandel berries. Thick, sweet, dense and pure, with the strong, sappy currant and cranberry flavors nicely framed by harmonious acidity. Finishes with very suave tannins and terrific sweetness of fruit. Schrader will have a couple more vineyard-designated zinfandels in 2003 from other sites in the Calistoga area.
