Score 93/100 · Drink 2015-2028, David Schildknecht, Vinous, Nov 2015

Luscious honeydew melon and apple are shadowed by musky, narcissus-like floral perfume and an esterous high-toned allusion to distilled fruits and berries, striking an entirely different key from that of the corresponding Piri, almost certainly due to this wine’s botrytis component. Silky in texture and downright opulent in its expansiveness and sheer sense of ripeness, this finishes with outstanding penetration, adding to its ripe array of fruits a welcome rivulet of fresh lime, an invigorating nip of raw ginger, and an almost implosively dense sense of stoniness.

Martin Nigl's steel-fermented 2013 Riesling Hochäcker Erste Lage is rich and opulent on the nose and displays some milky flavors from the malolactic fermentation the wine might have done. Full-bodied and creamy on the mouth, this is a very powerful wine with a mineral backbone but lacks balance and finesse and the moment. Still edgy and difficult to score.
