Score 95/100 · James Suckling, Feb 2019

A big and juicy cabernet franc with dark-berry and walnut-shell aromas and flavors that follow through to a full body, layers of tannins and a flavorful finish. Hints of smoke and spice. A little tight now. Give it three to four years of bottle age. Drink after 2022.

Made of 100% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Cabernet Franc Sleeping Lady Vineyard comes bursting forth with vibrant black and red cherry, black raspberry and red roses scents with hints of black tea and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, firm and grainy, the palate sings of fragrant red and black fruit layers, with a lively backbone and long, perfumed finish. 80 cases produced.

From an up and coming site readers need to keep on their radar, the 2016 Cabernet Franc Sleeping Lady is all varietal and was fermented and aged 23 months in 70% new French oak. It’s a full-bodied, concentrated, yet powerful Cabernet Franc that has the varieties complexity front and center, giving up loads of crème de cassis, chocolate, damp earth, and exotic flowers. With considerable elegance, a beautiful sweetness of fruit, no hard edges, and a great finish, it’s unfortunately made in tiny qualities but is well worth seeking out. 80 cases.

The 2016 Cabernet Franc Sleeping Lady is a gorgeous wine that captures the essence of The Debate's house style beautifully. Ample and full-bodied on the palate, the Franc from Sleeping Lady is sumptuous, rich and also wonderfully nuanced for a wine that offers so much intensity. Blood orange, red cherry and floral notes all convey the grace and finesse that is such a signature of this Yountville site.
