Score 91/100 · Drink 2002-2014, Robert Parker, Aug 2002

The thick, saturated garnet/purple-colored 1999 Merlot Peterson Family Vineyard offers up a big, smoky, earthy perfume revealing hints of fudge, black cherry and currant liqueur, in addition to toast. The wine is rich, chewy, pure, lush, and mouth-filling. It is soft enough to be drunk now, but should evolve for 10-12 years. Switchback Ridge is a new name to take seriously. Tel. (707) 738-6187

Saturated medium ruby. Roasted, liqueur-like aromas of black raspberry and bitter chocolate, with hints of maple syrup and sweet oak. Thick, lush and sweet, with superripe cherry, berry and chocolate flavors and pronounced oakiness. The suavest of the three current releases from this winery, but could use a bit more vibrancy and nuance. Finishes with substantial but very fine tannins.
