Deep, black-fruited and layered, the 2011 Nuts & Bolts is 100% Syrah that was harvest from the middle to end of November. Aged in 55% new French oak for 16 months, it delivers a seamless, silky profile with rich, full aromatics (cassis, barbecued meat, exotic spices) full-bodied richness, good acidity and a lengthy, pure finish that highlights finely polished tannin. As with the Grenache On the Road, it’s a slightly lighter, fresher version of this cuvee. Drink it over the coming 4-5 years. Drink now-2018. Russell From continues to release a bevy of smoking wines under his Herman Story label. His wines never lack for fruit or texture, yet to me, always stay beautifully balanced and downright thrilling to drink. A vivid, multi-dimensional wine the 2011 Syrah Nuts & Bolts bursts from the glass with the essence of blackberry jam, melted road tar, graphite, incense and licorice, all in a rich, broad-shouldered style that is immensely appealing. Vibrant mineral notes underpin an exciting, full-throttle Syrah loaded with personality. This may be one of the very finest Herman Story wines I have ever tasted. Readers will want to give the 2011 at least a few hours of air, as the wine really needs time to open up.
