DuMol's 2017 Syrah Estate Vineyard is dense, powerful and super-concentrated. Small berries with thick skins and relatively little juice yielded a Syrah with serious intensity and richness, but perhaps a bit less in the way of nuance. Perhaps that will develop in bottle. For now, the Estate is a rather brutish wine.

The 2017 Syrah Estate Vineyard was co-fermented with 6% Viognier. It was made with 33% whole cluster and aged 16 months in 30% new Ermitage hogsheads and 20% amphorae. Deep ruby-purple, it has a very pretty nose of gravel dust, violets, coffee bean and bitter chocolate with warm black cherries, blackcurrant, potting soil, blueberry and boysenberry plus notes of fried savory herbs. Full-bodied and very intensely flavored with gobs of warm chocolate nuance, it has a firm frame of very ripe, pixelated tannins and great freshness, with a very long, evolving finish. 220 cases produced.

The 2017 Syrah DuMOL Estate Vineyard is sensational and will give a top Hermitage a run for its money. Incorporating 6% Viognier and aged 16 months in 30% new oak (20% in amphora), it’s loaded with notions of blue fruits, iron, ground pepper, and tons of obvious minerality. It’s deep, medium to full-bodied, has building structure, and a great finish. This brilliant bottle of wine is going to keep for another 15 years or more.

The 2017 Syrah Estate Vineyard is a huge, deep, powerful wine, but also tightly wound and very hard to read today, especially next to the other wines in this range. Today, the Estate shows good aromatic depth, but is a bit light in texture. Just under 30% of the wine was fermented in amphora, a new experiment that will be fascinating to follow.
