Tasting notes
Tasted blind. Very dark. Pungent with real life and lift. Sweetness and freshness. Mulberries and lots of fun. Very soft. Bit sweet. (JR)

(25% of the tank-fermented portion of this wine was done with whole clusters; winemaker John Duval uses a submerged cap device to get more structure and rack-and-return for bigger but gentler color extraction): Bright ruby-red. Highly aromatic nose offers scents of raspberry, cinnamon, white pepper and olive tapenade. In a juicy, spicy, rather penetrating style; clean and fruit-driven, with a spicy mineral underpinning. Boasts excellent density to its purple fruit flavors and carries impressively on the finish. "Duval is not an animal type of guy when it comes to Syrah," noted Nicault when I commented on this wine's pure fruit character.
The only 2013 not yet in bottle, the 2013 Syrah Sequel (there’s 8% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend) gives up a big, rich, decadent style as well as lots of ripe black fruits, caramelized meats, licorice and wood-smoke like aromas and flavors. In a vintage that too often comes up short on texture and richness, this beauty delivers in spades. It should drink nicely right out of the gate.
