Tasting notes
Score 90/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2013

Cool, soil-driven aromas and flavors of blue fruits, licorice and underbrush struck me as quite claret-like. At once glyceral and fresh, offering lovely depth and sweetness in the middle, with bright tannins giving the wine more obvious focus than the 2009 release. Shows a distinct ferrous quality. Finishes with building ripe tannins. This should age very well. In comparison to the 2009s, the estate's 2010 cabernets are more acid- than tannin-driven, according to winemaker Brown.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is full of freshly cut flowers, violets, menthol crushed rocks and dark red cherries. There is a level of freshness and pure vibrancy in the 2010 that previous vintages don't have, most likely the result of the long, cool growing season. The balance of fruit, acidity and tannin is first-class. Nothing is out of place. In short, the 2010 Estate is gorgeous.

The MacDonnell family has been selling fruit from their vineyards in Rutherford to other wineries for years, but only began making their own wines with the 2002 vintage. All of the wines I tasted were beautiful and promising, except for the 2009 Bovet, which was corked. I hope to be able to taste that wine again soon. Thomas Rivers Brown is the consulting oenologist to Round Pond’s internal winemaking team. The Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is particularly of note considering its very reasonable price and a production of several thousand cases per year. Tel. (888) 302-2575; roundpond@roundpond.com
