Score 94/100 · Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jan 2018

A wine of distinction and personality, the 2013 Girolamo (Merlot) is also the most impressive wine in this range. A rush of black cherry, lavender, tobacco, licorice and savory herbs fills out the wine's huge, structured frame. There is quite a bit of creaminess and textural depth, but a few more years in bottle will only help, as the tannins are quite forbidding at this stage.

The 2013 Girolamo is a disappointment. This wine is weighed down by overripe sensations that make it feel flatter and heavier than it should. The bouquet opens to cured meat aromas with cooked cherry and blackberry preserves. Girolamo is one of Tuscany's top Merlots, but this vintage does not live up to the reputation set by previous editions. The wine feels prematurely aged even now, just out of the gate.
