Score 98/100 · Drink 2019-2039, Jeb Dunnuck, Jan 2019

From a site just beside Screaming Eagle, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Harbison Vineyard offers more black fruits, with some smoky, iron, and marine nuances all developing with time in the glass. Possessing full-bodied richness and depth, perfectly integrated fruit, acidity, and tannins, sensational purity of fruit, no hard edges, and a great finish, it shows off the purity and classical elegance of this vintage perfectly. As with most of Russell’s wines, it’s already drinking nicely yet is going to surprise in the cellar due to its balance.

Another highlight in this range, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Harbison Vineyard is imbued with a real sense of weight, power and gravitas. Charcoal embers, gravel, dark spice, black cherry and savory herbs race out of the glass. Powerful and vertical, with tremendous intensity in all of its dimensions, the Harbison is a total knock-out. Even with all of its size, the Harbison has tremendous detail.

Very deep purple-black in color, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Harbison Vineyard has an earthy, meaty nose with crème de cassis, baked cherries and warm plums with nuances of iron ore and yeast extract plus sautéed herbs. The palate is full-bodied, rich, concentrated and muscular with firm, grainy tannins and a long minerally finish. 25 cases produced.

A wine of gravitas and pure, brooding power, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Harbison Vineyard is impressive. Gravel, savory herbs, menthol and a host of dark, sepia-toned flavors abound. Readers should expect a full-throttle, explosive Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon build on serious intensity in all of its dimensions.
