Tasting notes
Inky ruby. Singed plum, boysenberry, Indian spices and camphor on the expressive nose. Juicy, spicy and full-bodied, with smoky dark red fruit compote and fruitcake flavors lifted by peppery spices. Rich but lively, with harmonious tannins and a long, gently chewy finish. This could handle full-flavored, grilled foods with ease.

Lastly, the 2008 Syrah Mandala is a blend of 88% Syrah, 8% Grenache and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. Its opaque ruby/purple color is followed by notes of black currants, blackberries, pen ink and a hint of graphite, a deep, full-bodied mouthfeel and a rich, long finish. As always, these are impressive, well-made, concentrated wines meant to hold up to extended cellaring. I have consistently enjoyed these wines from Big Basin winery. They are big, beautifully balanced and impeccably well made efforts displaying lots of purity. Sadly, production varies from only 70 cases of the Frenchies, to 300+ cases of the Rattlesnake Rock. A big wine, and a real charmer, the 2008 Big Basin Vineyards Syrah Mandala is a blend of 88% Syrah, 8% Grenache, and 4% Cabernet that was aged for 19 months in 50% new French oak. The Grenache portion shows on the nose, with an upfront, sweet bouquet of wild raspberries, licorice, crushed flowers, dusty earth, and chocolate ganache like aromas. Full bodied on the palate, with notable purity, and a round, friendly personality, as well as solid concentration and density, this beautifully made wine should drink well for a decade or longer.
