This vintage of the 2023 Les Lecons Des Maitres is 75% Sauvignon Blanc and the rest Semillon aged in 100% new oak, and it was unfined and unfiltered without going through malo. A very pretty wine in this vintage, it has a pale yellow/silver hue. The nose reveals aromas of white grapefruit, mango skin, lime, chive, and vanilla. The palate is focused and linear and offers a zesty bright spine of acidity as well as a pithy texture. It’s going to be worthwhile to hold it and allow it to open up over the coming 5-7 years.
The 2023 Les leçons des maîtres is, quite simply, divine. Comprising mostly fruit from 50-year-old vines in Ritchie, the 2023 was fermented in barrel and aged in 100% new French oak for ten months. This is so deeply minerally intense and rich. The density and weight conferred by the old vines is unmistakable, as is the phenolic power of Sémillon. Green apple, lemon confit, sweet mint and chalk build through the broad, focused finish. The 2023 is one of the best domestic Sauvignon Blanc-based wines out there, hands down.
