Gilles and Julien Barge own well-placed plots with old vines. Mid cherry red. Fresh and peppery with still some oak sweetness on the nose and with a chocolatey oak sweetness on the palate. Smooth and fresh but the oak seems to be the decisive factor. (JH)

The 2011 Cote Rotie Cuvee du Plessy reveals a dark ruby color and peppery, herbal, spicy notes intertwined with a hint of charcoal. Although the wine’s raspberry and black fruit are seductive, they possess a certain herbaceous character than some readers may not enjoy. It should drink well for 5-6 years. (Not yet released) Gilles Barge’s offerings are all traditionally made, old style Cote Roties, but he does appear to have made some moderate concessions by picking riper fruit, at least for the Cote Brune cuvee. 2010 is one of the finest vintages I have tasted from Barge, whose wines are often too herbaceous for my tastes.
