Score 17/20 · Drink 2017-2028, Jancis Robinson MW, Mar 2023

A blend of 69% Mourvèdre, 27% Grenache and 4% Counoise grown in Aiken volcanic soils. Smells of nutmeg and cola nut, carob and red fruit leather. Flavours of dates and roasted figs, cherry and leather mix with fantastic acidity and dried herbs. Hints of mulling spices and citrus peel emerge in the finish. Somewhat seamless and mysterious. A touch of heat in the finish. (AY)

The 2014 Caldera, Helen Keplinger's Mourvèdre-based red, is plump, dark and juicy. In this vintage, the Caldera is unusually rich and ample, yet also has real sense of gravitas. Plum, dark red cherry, leather, smoke and licorice build into the rich, succulent finish.

The 2014 Caldera comes across as restrained but also quite focused. A host of floral, savory notes accompany the red-fleshed fruit. Today, the 2014 feels a bit raw and not fully formed, yet it is compelling nonetheless.
