Ovid's 2010 Loc Cit (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) emerges from two adjacent blocks on the property planted with Clone 4 Cabernet. Rich, layered and totally voltuptuous, the 2010 impresses for its vibrant red fruit and stunning personality. Iron, smoke, tobacco, cedar and a host of earthy notes all add complexity, with vibrant notes of underlying minerality that provide support. With time in the glass the flavors become increasingly vivid in a dramatic Cabernet Sauvignon that captures the essence of this pristine site on Pritchard Hill. What a gorgeous wine this is.

(100% cabernet sauvignon): Good bright, deep ruby-red. Cassis and rose petal on the enticingly perfumed nose. Ripe and pure, with lovely intensity and lift to its flavors of black raspberry, cinnamon and sexy oak. Very classy, varietally expressive cabernet with a long, suavely tannic finish. This wine comes from a two-acre block (the estate owns 15 acres of vines).

The estate's 2010 Loc Cit (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) is beautiful beyond words. A huge, towering wine, the 2010 saturates every corner of the palate with black fruit, grilled savory herbs, melted road tar, smoke and licorice. Layers of fruit build effortlessly to the huge, enveloping finish. The tannins are there, but they are nearly completely buried by the wine's huge extract. Today, the 2010 is imposing, dark and very much brooding, but is also utterly breathtaking. At times, the Loc Cit is bigger and richer than the Ovid, but the wines are constantly changing in the glass. It will be fascinating to follow both over the coming years and beyond.

Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030. (Not yet released) Ovid keeps raising the bar with this drop-dead gorgeous set of new releases. Owners Dana Johnson and Mark Nelson have spared no expense in their pursuit to make world-class wines. These new releases are a testament to their unwavering commitment to quality. This year I also tasted two of the ‘Experiment’ series wines, which bear creative names inspired by Dana Johnson’s background in Library Sciences. The talented Austin Peterson makes the wines, Andy Erickson consults and David Abreu manages the vineyards, but what really counts is what is in the bottle. The results so far from this young property have been nothing less than stellar. Tel. (707) 963-3850; www.ovidvineyards.com
