Score 96/100 · Drink 2025-2035, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Sep 2023

The 2021 Pinot Noir Moonshine Ranch is shy and flinty to begin before opening to broody cherry, tobacco, mushroom powder and graphite aromas. The light-bodied palate is chalky and refreshing despite its highly concentrated, spicy fruit—an alluring combination that calls you back to the glass on the long finish. It's elegant and dangerously easy to drink, although it will mature gracefully over the next decade. 349 cases were made.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Moonshine Ranch Vineyard is laced with succulent red cherry fruit, spice, leather, tobacco and cedar. Medium in body and racy, the 2021 offers tons of immediacy in an up-front, light-bodied style (for Martinelli) that is quite attractive for near-term drinking.

A youthful ruby with a tinge of pink, the 2021 Pinot Noir Moonshine Ranch is lifted with fresh pine needles, ripe cherry, and purple flowers. Medium to full-bodied, with a darker fruit profile on the palate, it offers notes of blackberries, violets, and sweet earth. It has a supple texture and a long, juicy, rounded finish. Drink 2023-2030. One of the most historic names in Sonoma, the Martinellis are sixth-generation winegrowers based in the heart of the Russian River Valley. Prolific farmers, all of their wines come from estate-grown fruit, with 90% of the grapes sold off to other wineries. In addition to focusing on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, they also produce Zinfandel, Syrah, and Muscat of Alexandria. Courtney Robinett Wagoner joined the team in 2015 as the assistant winemaker before being promoted to winemaker in 2017.

Martinelli

Martinelli is a Sonoma benchmark for vineyard-designate bottlings—wines built to highlight how strongly a single site can shape Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Zinfandel. Across the range, the focus stays consistent: small-production bottlings that feel distinctly tied to where they’re grown.
