Score 89/100 · Drink 2018-2027, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2016
(14.5% alcohol; tasted from a 375-ml. bottle): Full, bright ruby. Rather bound-up, medicinal aromas of cassis, blackberry, herbs, licorice, creosote and mint. Then surprisingly sweet and supple in the mouth, with dark berry, Baker's chocolate, violet and spice flavors joined on the back half by fresh herbs and serious, slightly green-edged tannins. Developing at a snail's pace, especially considering the bottle format; this offers sweetness and texture but will it ever really open and blossom?

Complex cherry, cassis, black tea, spice box and raspberry notes get a lift from crackling acidity, though the finish is drying and tannic. (LM) $55
