Tasting notes
The 2009 Arise is a blend of 53% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 22% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet colored, it has an herb-laced nose of bay leaves and fried sage over a core of blackberry pie, stewed plums and dried mulberries plus a waft of cigar box. Medium to full-bodied, the dense, taut black fruit has loads of herbal sparks and a chewy texture, finishing savory.

(a Bordeaux blend based on 53% merlot): Bright dark red. Cassis, licorice, chocolate and loam on the nose, lifted by violet. Bright, chewy and dry on the palate, with cherry fruit complicated by herbs, earth, spices and licorice. The tannins are a bit dusty and the finish slightly herbal but this wine shows a lovely restrained sweetness and finishes with good shape and length.
