Bright, shaded rust/ruby. Sweet and vigorous but certainly not too sweet, nor too alcoholic. Actually pretty gentle and a great match for our magret de canard with confit potatoes and tenderstem broccoli with anchovy and garlic sauce. Possibly more so than the subtle mature clarets! This didn't last well in the opened bottle but had attractive spice and a hint of camphor. Subtle wine and a tribute to the Hirsch Vineyard. (JR)

The 2001 Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard is a firmly structured, medium-bodied, clipped, austere effort, but it offers pleasant aromas as well as an attractive attack. However, the finish is angular and attenuated. It should flesh out with another 1-2 years of cellaring and keep for a decade.
