One of two new offerings from Paso Robles, the 100% Syrahs, show Melka’s ability with this Mediterranean grape. Both are exceptional. The 2013 Syrah Majestique, which was aged in 300-, 400- and 500-liter puncheons with 30% whole-clusters, offers up notes of bacon fat, grilled meats, Provençal herbs, pen ink, and blackberry and black cherry fruits. It has terrific texture, a full-bodied mouthfeel and loads of minerality, as the soils from his vineyard source, the Paderewski Vineyard, are pure limestone. It should drink well for 10-15 years.

The 2013 Syrah Paderewski Vineyard has turned out beautifully. Lavender, mint, pine, dark spice and bluish fruit meld together in a silky, nuanced Syrah built more on texture than on varietal expression. Still, there is a lot to like here. Philippe and Cherie Melka have coaxed an unusual level of finesse from this Paso Robles site. A bit of new oak tannin and flavor remains, but this a strong effort nonetheless.
The 2013 Syrah Paderewski Vineyard is a big step up from the 2012. Firm tannins support a core of black pepper, spices, purplish fruit, violets and orange peel in a vibrant, pulsating Syrah full of energy. The flavors are wonderfully alive. In 2013, the Syrah was fermented in barrel, with 335 whole clusters and will spend about 20 months in French oak cigarillos, 60% new.
