More substantial, deep, and layered, the 2008 Wind Gap Wines Syrah Armagh Vineyard, fermented with 100% whole cluster and aged 18 months in neutral oak, displays a deep ruby/black color to go with masculine characteristics of smoked bacon, grilled meats, espresso, and smoked black fruits on the nose. This serious, age-worthy Syrah is medium-bodied and concentrated through the middle, showing brilliant acidity, fine grained tannin, and a long, muscular finish. It should ideally be given 2-3 years of bottle age, at which point it should have 10-12 years of longevity.

(12.7% alcohol; no new oak): Glass-staining ruby. Heady aromas of cassis, blackberry liqueur, violet oil and olive are enhanced by exotic notes of Indian spices and woodsmoke that gain strength with air. Deeply pitched black and blue fruit flavors show impressive concentration but there's an unlikely elegance here too. Packs a serious punch and finishes silky and long, with lingering spiciness.

From a cold site in the Petaluma wind gap, the 2008 Syrah Armagh Vineyard (less than 100 cases produced) reveals Northern Rhone-like aromas of bacon fat, tapenade and smoke. If tasted blind, this dark ruby/hued, medium-bodied, intriguing, provocative Syrah could easily be mistaken for a French wine. It should drink nicely for 5-6 years. Tel.
