The 2012 Papera Ranch Heritage, a Zinfandel-based field blend red, is another drop-dead gorgeous beauty. Dark cherries, plums, tobacco, licorice and new leather all burst from the glass. The style is rich, intense and voluptuous, but all the elements are in the right place. Today, the flavors are really popping. The 2012 is 54% Zinfandel plus an assortment of grapes, including Carignane, Petite Sirah, Valdigue, Cabernet, Trousseau Gris and others from a site planted in 1934.

The barrel samples I tasted include the 2012 Papera Ranch Heritage, a site planted in 1934 in the heart of the Russian River area. Composed of 54% Zinfandel and the remainder Carignan, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon and a number of obscure varietals, it achieved 14.7% alcohol and 350 cases were produced. Slightly rustic with a deep ruby/plum color along with hints of bouquet garni, earth, forest floor and red and black fruits, it is a mid-weight, tasty, stylish red to enjoy over the next 7-8 years. Morgan Twain Peterson, the son of Ravenswood's Joel Peterson, has hit the wine scene with a bang, producing vibrant, personality-filled, delicious wines from extremely old vines and, in some cases, virtually unknown grapes, such as Aubun, Teredalgo, Trousseau Noir, Le Noir, Mission, Trousseau Gris, Grand Noir and Abouriou, as well as Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Grenache, Carignan, Alicante Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Tempranillo. Many of these sites are heritage terroirs from the ancient past which, until Peterson's arrival, were largely ignored or were co-mingled into some innocuous industrial blend. Bedrock's portfolio is filled with exciting wines. The 2012s reviewed herein will all be bottled and released by Fall, 2014. Tel. (707) 343-1478
