A blend of three cooler-climate vineyards, including Majik, and Nellessen, the Wind Gap Sonoma Coast has become a classic of California Syrah. Carrying a beautiful balance of earthy, fruit, and floral elements with a long savoury-salty finish, the 2012 offers melting tannin with a long mouthwatering finish. Where the Majik focuses on aromatics, and the Niellessen on structure, the Sonoma Coast blend brings the two together with depth. (ECB)

Wind Gap's Syrah (Sonoma Coast) is once again terrific in 2012. Wild flowers, mint, violets and dark varietal fruits lift from the glass, with a lovely layer of savory overtones from the 100% whole clusters. In 2013, the core of the blend is Nellessen, but the exuberance of that site is nicely balanced by some of the more restrained fruit sources. All the elements come together in an effortless, gracious Syrah that delivers fabulous quality and personality, all at an exceedingly fair price.

Opaque purple. Potent black and blue fruits, licorice and floral pastille aromas show very good depth. Pliant and sweet in the mouth, with ripe dark berry and floral flavors enlivened by smoky minerality and a touch of cracked pepper. Finishes with slow-building tannins and very good length, leaving notes of violet and woodsmoke behind. (JR)

One of the hidden jewels in this range, the 2012 Syrah Sonoma Coast emerges from the glass with dark red fruit, followed by savory floral, smoke and spice notes that develop over time. Layered and expressive to the core, the 2012 impresses for its balance, intensity and complexity. I tasted the Sonoma Coast Syrah right after the vineyard designates, and it more than held its own. I can't recommend the Sonoma Coast Syrah highly enough in 2012. It is a stunner. The 2012 was done with 100% whole clusters and is a blend of Nellessen, Majik and Armagh, with a drop of Viognier in this vintage.
