Score 89/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2004

Bright ruby-blue. Lively, floral aromas of blueberry, currant, gunflint and smoked meat. Quite firm on the palate despite a high pH, with bright flavors of red fruits, smoked meat, spices and pepper. Finishes with solid tannins and good length. Shows much more varietal complexity than the 2001 bottling.

Score 87-88/100 · Drink 2003-2008, Robert Parker, Dec 2003

The 2002 Syrah Phoenix Ranch, from a vineyard planted at the base of Atlas Peak, exhibits an intense black/purple color as well as attractive Syrah aromas of bacon fat intermixed with blackberries, licorice, and a touch of pepper. In the mouth, it narrows a bit, and finishes with medium-bodied, firm tannin. Additional texture and flesh would result in an outstanding score. Drink it over the next 4-5 years. To date, Failla’s Syrahs have been lean and lacking texture, but Ehren Jordan has been working primarily with very young vines, so it is somewhat unfair to make definitive assessments.
