Wow, a tough wine to figure out and the 2005 Pax Cuvée Moriah really needed some air to calm down and show well. The nose is big, piercing and high toned with ripe plum, blackberry and licorice scents mixed, or shall I say completely soaked in, huge floral and exotic spice aromas. Medium bodied with nice balance, rich fruit, noticeable acidity and a tannic, long finish.

Score 92/100 · Drink 2007-2011, Robert Parker, Dec 2007

The 2005 Syrah Cuvee Moriah (a blend of 75% Grenache, 14% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, and 1% Roussanne) is deep ruby/purple with huge amounts of peppery black raspberry and kirsch notes, a touch of underbrush and fennel as well as a long, heady finish. This is sumptuous, puncheon-aged wine that is big on fruit, complexity, and deliciousness. This is not one for making old bones, so drink it over the next 3-4 years. Exciting wines seem to emerge annually from Pax Mahle, a self-trained winemaker (and all the better for it), and owner Joe Donelan. The 2005s are just hitting the shelf, and there are some sensational ones for sure. Tel. (707) 591-0782; Fax (707) 591-0784
