The 2022 Chryseia comes from a vintage in which the final three months of the season were the hottest ever recorded. Picking commenced on 22 August, and thankfully there were ten days of rain when temperatures began to fall the following month. The wine has a mellow bouquet with Morello cherries, red plum, a hint of earthenware and bouquet garni. There is lovely definition, but paradoxically, given the warmth that year, it is classical in style. The palate is medium bodied with pliant tannins. Acidity is perhaps lower compared to other vintages, yet the finish is quite long and tender with a tobacco tinge. Lovely.

The 2022 Chryseia feels very young and undeveloped, with plenty of aromas from the élevage in oak barrels. The wine is now vinified at Quinta do Roriz with prolonged maceration in the Bordeaux style and matured in new 400-liter French oak barrels. It's a wine that is designed for the medium to long term, dominated in its youth by creamy oak, ripe berry fruit and notes of aromatic Mediterranean herbs and flowers. It's medium to full-bodied with contained ripeness and alcohol (14%) and very fine and elegant tannins. This is a very nicely crafted Douro red, perhaps a little predictable and not very exciting, but very good indeed.
Full bottle an unnecessarily heavy 1,511 g. A joint venture between Bruno Prats and Charles Symington. Hot, dry vintage but with a big drop in temperatures in September. 75% Touriga Nacional, 25% Touriga Franca from Quinta de Roriz and Quinta da Perdiz, properties of Prats & Symington as well as the usual contribution from the neighbouring vineyard of Roriz, Quinta da Vila Velha, privately owned by Rupert Symington. Aged 15 months in 400-litre French oak barrels . Deep crimson with purplish rim. More obviously oaky than the Post Scriptum 2023 just tasted. More everything: more intense, more floral but also incredibly vibrant and rich. Deeply chewy, mouth-filling and yet ultimately an elegant-wine-in the-making. The tannins are compact and dense but already so smooth. Dark-fruited from damson to blackberry plus a bright note of mulberry, laced with spice and a light minty note. Very long and with so much potential complexity in an already harmonious and mellifluous whole. (JH)
