Closed on the nose with a waft of SO2 to begin, the 2017 L' Esprit de Chevalier Blanc opens with aromas of lemons and lime, wet pebbles and wild thyme with white pepper hints. The palate is medium-bodied, elegant and fresh with a citrusy finish.

The 2017 L’Esprit de Chevalier Blanc offers attractive scents of citrus fruit, lime flower and Clementine on the nose, tight at first but gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine bead of acidity, taut and linear with commendable delineation and mineralité towards the finish. It becomes ever more spicier with aeration. This is a fine Deuxième Vin.
Both whites from this benchmark estate outside of Leognan are terrific. The 2017 L'Esprit De Chevalier Blanc, which was first made in 1986 (it was originally called Batard Chevalier), offers a fresh, medium-bodied, beautifully balanced style on the palate as well as classy honeyed minerality, lime and citrus fruit, and plenty of floral notes. It’s already drinking nicely, yet I suspect it will also evolve gracefully for 4-6 years.
