The 2012 Les Trois Croix is a soft, pleasing Fronsac with fine overall balance and plenty of near term appeal. Sweet tobacco, earthiness, flowers and plump, red cherry notes are all nicely delineated. I would prefer to drink the 2012 over the next few years, while the fruit retains its distinctive juiciness.

From former Mouton-Rothschild general manager Patrick Léon, his family estate in Fronsac offers a 2012 that has more intensity and flavor than normally found from this proprietor’s wines. With loads of mineral-laced blue and black fruits, medium to full body, impressive purity, texture and length, this sleeper of the vintage is an excellent offering from Fronsac. Drink it over the next decade.

Inky black cherry. Pure bright cassis and just a hint of cedar. Dryer and flatter on the palate than expected. Lacks energy. (JH)
