Inky ruby. Dark berry, cherry pit and licorice scents, backed by a hint of gaminess. Taut and focused on the palate, offering bitter cherry and cassis flavors that open up and become sweeter with aeration. Shows good delineation and lift on the chewy, dark-fruit-driven finish, which lingers with strong, youthfully tannic persistence.

More sappy and floral than the Henri release, the 2014 Cornas Patou has a medium-bodied, juicy, old-school feel to go with lots of mint, pine and violet characteristics on the nose. It certainly incorporates some green notes, but it’s more floral than herbaceous, and it has a solid core of fruit, fine tannin and a great finish. It will be interesting to see how it comes together once in bottle, but it should be classic Cornas to drink on release and over the following decade.
